The little Surf Town in Mexico that felt like I was in a scene " From Dusk to Dawn" the Movie

Driving down a deserted looking road 30 miles North of Cabo San Lucas and 10 miles South of Todos Santos located in El Pescadores in the Baja California Sur region is this famous Surf Town called Cerritos Beach I hadn't done any research or knew about it prior to exiting the main road to drive down a dirt road to what looked like a Ghost Town. All I saw was Cactus's, tumbleweeds rolling past us and dried out bushes.

In my mind, I was thinking to myself, "is my guy trying to make me disappear?" is this where it all ends"  because ain't no way this is a real place. Immediately, I let him know that I was not going to feel comfortable there and that we should leave. He suggested we just go take a look first and make sure it's the right place. Since it was still daylight I agreed but was side eyeing him at the same time.

Side note: I trusted him enough to travel with, I just didn't trust that decision to stay there.  Seriously felt like a scene out of the pop culture movie made back in 1996 called From Dusk to Dawn where two dangerous outlaws George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino called the Gecko Brothers who kidnapped a Father and two kids after a crime spree of robbing banks then headed south to Mexico for refuge at what they thought was a regular truck stop. They go have a drink inside this bar they later discover was populated with vampires. Actually it was the whole town.

old desert road that looks scary

To add some context, I had watched this movie over a dozen times, I don't watch scary movies at all but the way Robert Rodriquez directed and Quentin Tarantino who's movies are my favorite, wrote it.

I was so intrigued with the characters that the tattoo George Clooney who plays "Seth" had of a spider wrapped around his neck that I got a similar design on mine except with the arms of the sun wrapped around it because it  was so Bad A... to me.

(*sidenote ) A few years later after it premiered, I met George at a Sean Paul (Reggae) Concert in VIP at Green Valley Ranch Pool in Las Vegas. I showed him my tattoo and told him how it inspired me to duplicate. He was so intrigued the way he was listening to me, fully engaged with my story that he ran his fingers down my tat touching my neck and chest ever so gently saying it was awesome.

Then he introduced himself, reached out to shake my hand and kissed MY HAND.  I almost passed out.. He stood there as I  stared at him hypnotized, in love shock.  I didn't speak after that. He let several seconds go by and just gracefully walked away after saying nice to meet you... Uh!!! I can't believe I fanned out like that. I could have told him I was a Hairstylist and had a private room suite in an upscale salon off the Las Vegas Strip (City where I lived at the time) to cut his hair at the least but I froze. Un-freaking believable!

That's how much I loved the style of this movie, so when we were driving through, it looked very familiar, I was like oh no no no no no (in the Sista's voice and expression from Get Out).

Resort in the Desert

What's even more crazy is I just googled the location images of the film and it actually does look just like it 😨. Not a person in sight, how was this a surf town? So the first thing we did was drive through straight to the beach that looked surprisingly like pretty decent waves. It was windy by that afternoon, mostly blown out already but I could see there was still some good shape to the waves so I was like, oh ok.

Thinking to myself, I guess, I'll calm down a little bit. He was very intentional about other dates he had planned in the past and knew what I liked so I decided to chill out. We drove about a minute from there to a small resort village that had about 4 Tiny homes. The Owner who lived on the Property was waiting for us with her two Dogs (who looked like they were skilled Hunters) made me feel safe. If anything popped off , based on the movies I've seen (mostly Sci-Fi) the Dogs were going to let us know which I was lowkey praying anyway. She was a nice lady who seemed happy to meet us and show us around but you know vampires are always nice.

You could here your own footsteps from the heavy silence that penetrated the air. The rustic atmosphere was the theme and felt like a place to go for extreme solitude. There were no lights on the road where we came from neither were there any really in sight around the property. I knew this was going to be the most peculiar experience.
When I saw the surfboards, I did feel more comfortable knowing they were there. Still no People were around so I really didn't know what to expect but it was getting dark quickly and we had been on the road for 4 hours prior and it's best not to be driving through  Mexico or anywhere else on a dark highway at night with no lights. That's always the scenario of a horror flick right?  I don't even drive at night when traveling across the US where I've been to 36 of the 50 States. It's just safer to post up and start early.

Tiny Home Resort Viva Cerritos

Tiny house resort in the middle of the desert in mexico

The tiny home we stayed at had surf themed Décor, surf wall art and all the amenities for cooking, even the bathroom had plush towels, beds on both sides of the home with layers of quilts on them for the cold nights which we were told would is common for around this time, It was very cute.

It had lots of window and a very modern feel. We unpacked our things got situated in our new living quarters and decided to go up the street to a restaurant we saw by the beach. Surprised to see People were there and it looked as normal as any other place to eat considering the quietness of the surrounding environment.

It wasn't hard to find because it's literally the only place visible for miles to eat. I don't know the name of it but you wouldn't be able to miss it if you came to Cerritos Beach. It was near a hotel that appeared empty too but there were cars out front.

It looked like the kind of town where People just stayed indoors unless it was time to surf. A few motorcycles pulled up and went towards the hotel which further solidified my imagination of this mysterious town.

Eating at the Restaurant in Cerritos, Beach

As we walked inside passing this Indigenous statue which is located at the entrance, the staff greeted us with smiles and seemed genuinely interested in us being there. They were friendly and we actually dialogued in conversation with them for a long time. T

The chips and salsa was homemade. By the way the food smelled coming from the kitchen, I could tell there were People who knew what they were doing. Trust me, I'm an expert at this. The place was an indoor/outdoor restaurant built around nature. The outside walls had avocados and limes growing on it.

They also had vegan options on the menu so I ordered the Avocado Burrito which is something I never even heard of before and Oh My God Becky, it was cooked to perfection. I loved that the tortilla was charred giving it a solid wrap to hold (I can't stand a soggy burrito unless it got sauce on top), it had a homemade creamy slaw inside next  to a lightly breaded buttery avocado.

Listen, Bay-bee!!! It was absolutely "tan deliciosa" and flavorful. I can confidently say, it was the best Vegetarian Burrito I've ever had in my entire life.

If I had to eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would be in my top 3 choices. I could only eat half of it and was happy to save the other for lunch the next day. I give the food there a 10 out of 10!!! I actually ordered another 2 more days.

After dinner I was starting to feel even more comfortable because when the food hit right, it's going to be a good night. Back up the street at our tiny home cabin, I was settling in, took a nice hot shower, made some tea and went upstairs to my side of the cabin where my quarters were.

From the Dusk at Sunset

Even though it still felt like the Quentin Tarantino movie, I was realizing that even though it felt odd to me, there were People who loved to live this way. It was peaceful. It's a place you could do a lot of deep thinking, read or write books and have talks with God.

As the Sunset , it started to show up and show out with these magnificent colors. It was stunning. I took this photo lying in bed from the window upstairs. Watching the sky grow darker so did my eyelids and I fell into a deep sleep.

It turned pitch black and I had to use my camera flashlight to go to the restroom in the middle of the night. The lady was not lying when she said it would get very cold, luckily there were space heaters we could use.

The tiny home resort was very well thought out and I give it a 8 1/2 out of 10.  I can consider that one of the best restful nights I've ever had considering that I'm a  light sleeper. Very strange, lol.

By the daytime, the beach was open and packed with People sitting in lawn chairs, others were already surfing. I don't know where they came from, it looked like a whole different place from the day before.

I  got to rent a wetsuit from one of the locals who taught lessons and my board was from the resort we stayed at. The waves were A1 quality and fun. You can go right or left and has a decent sandbar.
After the surf we walked along the Coast behind me and found this section that had the best view of the Ocean from it. I met a Californian who moved there after retirement and was sharing all his surf stories with me about the place. He said it gets around 12ft and it's pretty gnarly.

My Review of Cerritos Beach

I would give Cerritos Surf Beach a 8 out of 10, the locals get a 8 out 10 for being very welcoming except for the one at the surf shop  (0 out of 10) next to the restaurant.

I was going to buy a shirt and the dude working there was so bothered by me looking at them, he stood next to me and re-arranged them every time I touched it. I folded them back up just like they were in the bins but he reacted like I had thrown them across the room or something, so of course I eventually left without buying anything.

What a  shame for the business. Also we couldn't find any wax, I kept slipping off this foam board but managed to ride a few, overall a good experience for the unexpected adventure, I never knew that I needed.

The good waves it pumped out for a couple of hours before the mid-morning wind kicked in is to be noted. A change from the hustle and bustle of life. Great for an interesting adventure.
